1960s London and a bright and studious teenage girl is studying hard to get into Oxford. Her ambitions are diverted by a love affair with a man twice her age and the education he gives her in the ‘university of life’. An Education was one of the British award winners in 2009, especially for Carey Mulligan’s central performance and Nick Hornby’s script.

Jane Campion directed this sumptuous exploration of the wildly romantic love affair between the poet John Keats and his neighbour, the beautiful and willful Fanny Brawne. Set in 1818 this might be a poet biopic costume drama but it is also a sexy and modern exploration of two people deeply in love.

This is the latest film pairing the Spanish director Pedro Almodovar and his actress muse, Penelope Cruz. Harry Caine, a writer, may be blind but he is doing his best to live life well and forget his past life until an accident forces him to retell his story and remember the love he lost.

Come and join us for our “Christmas Classic”, directed by Carol Reed, written by Graham Greene and starring Orson Welles this is one of those films you must see if you haven’t seen it and if you already have, to see it again. A true film noir set in a postwar Vienna where the trade in illegal penicillin fuels murder and deception. Oh, and there’s that zither too.

FEBRUARY 2011 (HFS AGM): A Single ManAfter the HFS AGM 17th February
AGM meeting with a free showing of this award winning tear jerker. Colin Firth won most of the awards for his portrayal of a gay English professor in 1960s California facing up to the emptiness of his life after the sudden death of his partner. Based on a novel by Christopher Isherwood and directed by fashion designer Tom Ford this is a stylish film of acceptance and identity.

The chameleon actor Michael Sheen stars in this unassuming and charming road movie. The gentle pace is set by his moped as they potter over the Pennines in pursuit of his two-timing wife at a darts competition in Blackpool. Damien O’Donnell, also of East of East, directed.

MAY 2011: The Illusionist7.30pm 5th and 6th May 2012
By the creator of Belleville Rendezvous Sylvain Chomet, this animation is a gentle tale set in the 1950s. It takes us on a journey from Paris to a lovingly depicted Edinburgh and on to the Hebrides as the magician Tatischeff (an animated version of Jacques Tati) tries to make his living in a changing world. After its premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival, before general release August 2010, this film was acclaimed for its gorgeously detailed imagery and moving story.
