Young Indies 2017 Short Film Competition and Workshops

Following the successful inauguration of the Young Indies Short Film Competition in 2016, Heartland Film Society ran the competition again in 2017, and invited young people to create and submit their own short film.

Who can enter?
The competition is open to any individual or group based in Highland Perthshire and aged from 5 to 18 years old. There are two categories:-
  • Junior: films created by children of primary school age (5-11 yrs) and
  • Senior: films made by youngsters of secondary school age (11–18 yrs)

6 films will be short-listed from each category. These films will be shown in the Birks Cinema during the Aberfeldy Film Festival and prizes awarded to the winners.

What kind of film?
There's no restriction on subject or style, so let your imagination run wild. Entries, however, must be no more than 10 minutes long.

Important 2017 competition dates
  • Entries must be registered by Friday 29 September 2017
  • Films must be submitted by Friday 27 October 2017
  • A fee of £5.00 is payable on registration
  • A parent/guardian consent form is required for each child

Free workshops for young filmmakers
While some practical help from adults is acceptable, any films entered in the competition must be conceived, written, directed and produced by the youngsters themselves.  Subject to funding being received, we plan to offer film-making workshops in September and any films completed during these workshops may be entered in the Young Indies competition.

In 2016 and 2017 the workshops offered aspiring young filmmakers the chance to work with a professional filmmaker and to learn about the whole process of producing a film - from creating story and characters, camera shots and storyboard, through to filming and editing.
